Van Empel strongest on tough course in Gavere
On a tough course in Gavere, world champion Van Empel was the convincing winner of the classic. She finished over half a minute ahead of her compatriot Brand, who remains leader in the standings. Pieterse, last year’s winner, came third.
Fem Van Empel (Visma Lease a Bike) took the lead early in the race. Only Pieterse (Fenix-Deceuninck), last year's winner, could follow the wheel of the world champion. The course in Gavere has no secrets. On lap two, Van Empel made her first push on the climb where running was required. Pieterse cracked and by the end of the second lap and after 20 minutes of racing, the world champion had established a lead of about 15 seconds.
The riders would ultimately only ride five laps, which indicated how tough the course was in Gavere. Brand (Baloise Trek Lions) left Vas behind in her pursuit of Puck Pieterse and second place. On the penultimate lap, Brand was finally able to catch her. She went straight past last season’s winner.
Up front, Van Empel was still able to extend her lead. The world champion started the final lap with a 33-second lead. On that final lap, Pieterse was able to rejoin Brand. After a slide by Brand, it was Pieterse’s turn to apply the pressure. In the sloping running section, Brand again gained the upper hand.
And she did not relinquish second place. Meanwhile, in front, victory was all but guaranteed for Van Empel. She took the win, 37 seconds ahead of her compatriot. Pieterse eventually finished in third place, 46 seconds behind the winner.
